How It Works

The language behind your four totem guides — and the layers that turn a totem pole into a map for understanding yourself and others.

Hope, Understanding & Grace

Totem Astrology is built on hope — hope for understanding yourself more clearly, hope for understanding the people you love, and hope that compatibility is real: that there are partners, friends, and family members who can meet you where you are. The four animal guides are a shared language for that hope. They give us something abstract to point to when inner life feels messy or hard to explain.

This system is not an excuse for bad behavior, and it is not permission to tolerate other people's bad behavior. It is a tool for comprehension — for seeing how different inner modes operate, appreciating those differences, and offering grace where understanding makes room for it. Accountability and compassion belong together.

Your Four Totem Guides

Totem Astrology builds on the Chinese Four Pillars of Destiny — birth year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar reveals one totem animal ally: your Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, and Physical guides. Together they form one totem pole — four facets of a single birth moment, stacked from Body at the base through Heart and Mind to Spirit crowned at the top.

The Five Elements

Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal — each section of your totem pole pairs an animal with one of these Five Elements, adding a precise layer of texture to your Spirit, Mind, Heart, and Body animal guides. The Five Elements can also be thought of as five templates for the motion of energy — each with its own direction, logic, and Yin & Yang expressions.

Yin & Yang

Before Rainbow companions, Shadow bonds, or any pairing logic enters the picture, Yin and Yang are two fundamental ways that energy moves. Polarity is baked into each totem animal from the start — an Squirrel is always Yang, a Buffalo always Yin, a Tiger always Yang, a Cat always Yin, and so on through all twelve.

Yang initiates, extends, and asserts — moving outward into the visible world. Yin receives, deepens, and completes — gathering inward toward stillness and refinement. Your totem pole mixes both, but each animal’s polarity never changes.

Values Triangles

The twelve totem animals group into four triangles, each organized around a core value: Power & Prestige, Stability & Security, Inspiration & Idealism, and Peace & Harmony. Every animal prioritizes one of these lenses when making important decisions — not exclusively, but first.

Sacred Roles

Within each Values Triangle, the three animals play one of three Sacred Roles: the Seeker, the Mage, or the Royal — three distinct ways of embodying that triangle’s core value. The same value can be pursued directly and built upon, wielded subtly and played with, or embodied as natural authority and demonstrated boldly.

Why We Shift to Nepal Time

Before your animals are calculated, we convert your birth moment to Nepal Time (NPT) — a timezone shift rooted in an intuitive discovery that this so-called “Chinese Astrology” system actually has its roots in myths about the Jade Emperor, who dwelt atop the Jade Mountain in the K’un Lun Mountain Range serving as Tibet’s northern border. It then gets delivered down to us humans from the Buddha, whose birthplace is traditionally held to be in Nepal. Thus converting birth times to NPT first helps the day and hour animals line up with the truths people all over the world recognize in their own Hearts and Bodies.
